With such a low number I was called in for my army physical in February and passed (like everybody else). Since I had no desire to join the Army and go to Vietnam I started exploring alternatives. I considered joining the Navy. I even passed their physical, but it was a three year program.

Thus I consulted a draft counselor. He suggested that I start studying to pass a Conscientious Objector test. He also got me in touch with a doctor who was sympathetic. He gave me a very brief exam and then wrote a letter to my draft board telling them of the seriousness of my illness. It worked. I got reclassified as I-Y and wasn’t even sick.
