The only lottery I have ever won, was the one I lost in 1969. I can remember receiving my lottery number 196 and really not knowing whether this was going to be good or bad. Well, by September I didn’t like the prospects.
I went to the local draft board and inquired whether No. 196 was going to be called that year. As it turned out the Selective Service had just called up several numbers, ending with 195!!!! The secretary at the draft board, chuckled (rather inappropriately I thought) then apologized by explaining they had just heard from Selective Service that they were hoping to hold it at 195 for the rest of year. I sure became religious between September 1970 and January when the next lottery was held. Those were difficult months, but 195 held and I escaped being drafted.
