I had about a year left in college before graduation when the lottery took place.  My degree was to be in secondary education and it was my hope that I would be teaching in a high school somewhere in NC.  I remember watching the lottery on television and when my number of 314 came up, I was thoroughly relieved.  Since I later found out that the draft for my year only called individuals with numbers up to 195, I knew that I would not have to serve in Vietnam.  As a result, my future employment plans did not change and I was able to secure a teaching position in 1971.  I was never called to serve.  I taught for 30 years and retired in 2000.
