The annual lottery drawing event was watched with anticipation by students as a sort of public event in the undergraduate Powell Library at UCLA (where I was a college junior). Since my drawn birthdate number was a relatively high 211, and the prior year only called up to 195, I elected reclassification as I-A ("eligible for induction"), and thus gave up my II-S (a deferred student) in order to end my draft exposure as soon as possible. I was never drafted, and simply carried my registration card for the next ten years or so.
