I was waiting to go to a rehearsal with the then up-and-coming Manhattan Transfer vocal group. I wasn’t even quite sure what lottery meant other than random. I was 18 years old. When September 26th, the day before my birthday, was drawn and it was 034, my heart dropped. I figured I was 035 and on my way. When September 27th was drawn and it was 248 I was thrilled. Being a musician, I was not anxious to pick up an M-16, although I would have if called.
Ironically, 5 years ago I joined the ‘Nam Knights of America M.C. An awesome motorcycle club of Vietnam Vets and police officers. I am proud and honored to be with such an elite group. We are now patching Iraq and Afghan vets. So, life is interesting and I am prouder than ever to be an American.
