I was a student at NC State University and was concerned that I was going to be drafted so I joined the Army Reserve and was on active duty when the lottery occurred. My number was 352 which meant that I would never have been drafted. Of course I could not have known this, and so I ended up serving my country without having to go to Viet Nam in a war in which the US never declared war!
While on active duty most of the soldiers that I trained with were going to Viet Nam while I returned home eventually to my Reserve Unit.
