My deferrment as a UK student was up in May of 1971 and I received a "Greetings" letter from the draft board about a week prior to the end of that semester. I had to report to their office in Lexington early one morning and board a bus with about 40 other young men. Our destination was a facility in Louisville for a physical exam. I recall the stark difference in the ride up and the ride back. Even though most of us didn’t know each other, there was a lot of nervous banter on the ride there. However, on the trip home it was virtually silent.

As for me, I had been diagnosed with a particular congential condition in my back that the military rejected as unfit for duty. I have often wondered how many on that bus have survived what seemed for sure to be eventual deployment to South Vietnam and how they are now.
