I remember vividly having a relatively low lottery number (119) and being called for a physical. At the time I was classified II-S but I was about to enter grad school and lose the II-S status. The physical was interesting to say the least and fortunately I was reclassified IV-F due to some physical maladies (mostly orthopedic issues secondary to playing football). Interestingly, I was drafted, by the NFL not the Selective Service. I played 7 years for the Denver Broncos and while playing also attended medical school. Upon admission to med school I was again reclassified as II-S and eligible for service. By the time I had finished school and training the draft was over. I lost several classmates to Vietnam and thanked the good Lord that my number did not come up again.
