I was attending the University of Kansas when the 1969 draft lottery was implemented. At the time I was living in a coed dorm, McCollum Hall and we all gathered around the television in the main lobby. This is a large dorm; three wings, 10 stories so there was a rather large but quiet crowd. The thing that stuck in my mind from that event was how incredible it was that one of the two guys sitting right in front of the TV drew No. 1, and the other drew No. 365 – what were the odds of that happening?
Getting No. 335 I was relieved to say the least. There was one heck of a party afterwards. I later was told that my local draft board, Stamford CT, had enough "volunteers" so as to not need to draw upon the draft numbers; not sure of the validity of that though.
