I became classified as 1-A in April 1971, after leaving the US Air Force Academy and passing the army physical. I then attended college, fully expecting to be called during that Spring semester. However, in approximately November or December 1971, Sec. of Defense issued draft moratorium for 3 months, then extended it for 2 more months, giving me 12 months as 1-A without being called up. That lawfully removed me from draft consideration. I believe I was very fortunate as I understand the law and events of the time.
