When I graduated from UNC in 1969, I had a draft classification of I-A. My father was a manufacturers representative and was responsible for business in the Southeast. He was suffering from complications with diabetes and was physically unable to drive and transact his business. As a result, I went to work for him immediately upon graduation in order to help him with the transportation and physical logistics.
Upon receiving my draft notice, I appealed to the various local, state, and regional draft boards for an occupational deferment, but was voted down each time. Consequently, in the Fall of 1969, I was exploring various service options including the Navy Seals.
When the lottery was announced, I was fortunate to have a high lottery number and this allowed me to continue to work with my father until his death shortly thereafter. Hence, the lottery did impact my life by allowing me to assist my family in their time of need.
