My friends and I met at the Heidelburg Tavern to watch the drawing on TV. I went to college because I was able to get a student deferment. When they did away with that, it was the lottery that protected me. My number that night was 274 and I was happy because it was a high one. The joke was that women and children would go before me! It was a load off my mind because I didn’t believe in the war and didn’t want to go. I graduated in June, 1970 but we got to leave school in early May due to the unrest following the Kent Sate Massacre. You could take your grade you had currently or repeat the course. I took my grade, graduated, and left.
